Skincare Secret #6: Use Liquid Bandage Before Concealing a Pimple or Blemish

“It smooths out the surface so it’s easier to hide giving you flawless looking skin.” –Dr. Wu

In order to get that smooth anti-aging surface, use liquid bandage. It’s an antiseptic treatment that covers cuts, wounds, and dry or cracked skin. Basically, it protects your skin while it heals and lets it breathe.

IMPORTANT: A liquid bandage should not be used on a daily basis for covering up acne. Talk a dermatologist if your acne is persistent or if you have a reaction to the product.

Skincare Secret #7: Don’t Underestimate a Washcloth to Clean Your Face

“You don’t need a facial brush or special product. For light exfoliation, I use just a washcloth with moderate pressure. Plus, I also like that it’s easy to wash—and that’s important, because dirt and bacteria can lead to breakouts.” –Dr. Downie

We’re already believers in the skin benefits of silk pillowcases, and dermatologist Patricia Wexler says raw silk works wonders as a cleansing cloth as well. “It’s soft enough to be good for any skin type, but loosens up dead skin cells, toxins, makeup, and anything you want to get rid of.” She explains that sericin, a protein found in silk, helps with “cellular regeneration, cellular repair, and skin hydration.” 

Skincare Secret #8: Bright Lights Could Damage Your Skin and Excelerate Aging

Research has shown that blue light can be bad for skin and can cause skin discoloration and wrinkles with over use of your phone/tablet at night.
Long-term exposure to concentrated blue light energy can cause skin damage, including color changes, inflammation, and weakening of the skin’s surface. Simply put, blue light promotes stressors in skin that cause photo-aging; that is, aging from exposure to light.

Skincare Secret #9: Ditch the Loofah

“They trap bacteria more than anything else.” –Dr. Downie

As a dermatologist, I never recommend a natural loofah for showering. They aren’t great for exfoliating and they don’t dry well. That perpetually damp loofah sitting in the shower is home to microbes that can cause infection on your skin. Some of the happy pathogens (germs) that call your loofah “home” include pseudomonas aeruginosa (a sweet-ish smelling bacteria that loves damp places), staph aureus (a sour smelling bacteria that causes impetigo and other serious skin infections) and candida yeast.

Skincare Secret #10: Drinking from a Straw Causes Wrinkles

“Anti-aging equals anti-straws. The puckering will crease your upper lip, leading to ‘lipstick lines.’” –Dr. Wu

Don’t do it. There’s just no way around it—it’s an important habit to break if you want to avoid wrinkles (AKA smokers’ lines) around the mouth. 

“When drinking out of a straw, the movement of the mouth area that you have to make will encourage the breakdown of collagen and elasticity more quickly, causing unnecessary wrinkles and lines.”

Skincare Secret #11: Use Silk Pillowcase To Fight Anti-Aging Wrinkles and Change your Pillowcase Often

Sleeping on silk may also help slow visible signs of aging. These silk pillowcases will have you looking like a million bucks from sunrise to sunset. Cotton and polyester pillowcases can pull at and suck moisture from your skin and hair throughout the night, leaving you a hot mess in the morning,

Moisturizers are most effective when skin is still damp, as damp skin best absorbs the moisture and locks it in for a longer time. As the back of the bottle says, you should always apply moisturizer to clean skin—and for maximum results, shortly after cleansing, before your skin is totally dry.

Skincare Secret #13: Use a Non-Lathering, Soap-Free Body Wash

Soap free body wash is a must have in your shower if you have sensitive skin as it doesn’t strip your skin of natural oils in same way as ones containing soap.. But what is the best soap free body wash, and why is it better to use one?

Skincare Secret #14: Put a Glove or Sock On to Hydrate Your Dry Skin

“I recommend applying Vaseline or a rich hand cream and wearing gloves overnight. If you have dry feet, moisturize them the same way and then put on socks.” –Dr. Chang

 Try to spend a few minutes before bed every night taking care of your feet. … After applying moisturizer, put your feet up for a few minutes with the socks on, but just for a few minutes, and when you remove the socks pat any excess moisturizer away using a thick towel.
